Crimp-on rings are external retaining rings. They have tabs on either side of the ring and are placed into a groove in a rod or shaft to hold it in place. The tabs on the open end are crimped together to hold the ring in place. The tabs on the opposite side are squeezed together to remove the ring. They are also called X-washers.
