Poodle rings are external retaining rings. They have wide shoulders or "ears" on either side of the open end and are placed into a groove in a rod or shaft to hold it in place. The wider shoulder area offers extra surface retention area which is able to resist higher forces than other retaining rings. They are also called PO-clips.
