Open End Rivets
Unlike the alternative closed end rivets, open end rivets do not provide a liquid or vapor prevention seal when setting is complete. Also known as the "Nail Rivet"; the open rivet relies on a unique mandrel head design to complete the application and serves as the secondary clamping element of the fastened joint; ensuring positive stem retention after installation for greater shear and tensile strength of the fastened joint.
During the manufacturing process, the round mandrel head is flattened on two sides. Then during rivet installation, the rivet body folds around these two contours as the mandrel travels through the rivet body. The result is an oblong shape in the tail of the open end rivet body. This oblong shape encapsulates the mandrel head and prevents the mandrel from falling out or rattling free during the life cycle of the application.
